Trump takes credit for Qatar's isolation

Following Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE cutting ties with Qatar, Donald Trump has - somewhat unsurprisingly - waded in and taken credit for the move.

During the speech he made in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Trump pointed the finger of blame towards Iran, for supporting radicalisation.

In the same speech, he encouraged Muslim leaders to spearhead the fight against it. He called the battle against extremism one of “good and evil.”

Now, after the actions of the aforementioned nations, Trump has taken to Twitter. He stated that his visit is “already paying off”, and that this is potentially the “beginning of the end of terrorism”.

Trump also said that when he stated there can be no more funding of radical ideology, leaders “pointed to Qarar”.

The claim is a bold move by the United States President as, in doing so, he showed support for the actions of the Middle Eastern nations - which will undoubtedly strain relations between the United States and Qatar.

Qatar is home to the largest US military airbase in the Middle East, Al Udeid. It houses 11,000 US military personnel, and was a major launch point for B-52 strikes against Isis in Syria and Iraq in 2016.

Since the split, banks have stalled in dealings with Qatar - perhaps a sign of struggles to come for the small Arab nation.
