Premier League: Who are Fulham Football Club?

Fulham began their football life in 1879, founded as Fulham St Andrew’s Church Sunday school F.C. The club gained professional status in 1898, and by 1907 were a member of the Football League. Come 1949, the club had made it into the First Division, the modern Premier League’s precursor, however often dropped and rose between England’s top two divisions.


1970-1997 was a relatively bleak period for the Cottagers, but fortunes were about to change with the takeover of Mohammed Al-Fayed. By 1999, Fulham was in Division One and come 2001, the team was back in the Premier League - and set to stay for thirteen years.

In this period, the club had a number of the Premier League’s most experienced managers, including Roy Hodgson and Mark Hughes. The Cottagers are yet to win a major honour, yet came close in 2010, losing the inaugural Europa League’s final to Atletico Madrid 2-1.  The 2013/14 season saw the club relegated, after an erratic succession of managers such as Martin Jol and René Meulensteen. Prediction:

Fulham have made three great signings in Mitrović, Seri and Schürrle. Schürrle brings plenty of Premier League experience, and quality, and so does Mitrović, whilst Seri provides reassurance in midfield. The club also has the standout player in the Championship last year, Ryan Sessegnon, who is still only eighteen. The club has also found consistency with manager Slaviša Jokanović, who has been at the helm since 2015.  If the club, and the board, don’t set expectations too high. It’s key the club remembers that’s only just got back, and the goal for this season is to simply survive - no more need be asked of them. For that, home form is absolutely vital, and so Jokanović will no doubt be focused on turning Craven Cottage into his very own Turf Moor. If home form is maintained, as well as the players keep their heads, Fulham could very well finish between 12th and 15th.
